Students Triumph Once Again at the Annual Salon Culinaire

Tuesday 30th January marked the return of North Warwickshire and Hinckley College’s annual Salon Culinaire and the standard was incredibly high as inspiring young chefs from up and down the country took the compeition by storm!
North Warwickshire and Hinckley College’s annual Salon Culinaire sees students from up and down the country come together to compete in a range of catering and hospitality competitions. Action packed from start to finish, it was an excellent day with an amazing array of talent on display as the chefs of tomorrow competed to be awarded merit, bronze, silver or gold awards.

Salon Culinaire gives students the chance to show off their skills in classes that cover a full range of culinary skills from Fine Food and Cake Decorating to Live Flambéing and Street Food. It’s also a chance for them to experiment with products that they may encounter in their future careers and this year, Major were the proud sponsors of three of the classes, yielding some excellent results.

Inspired by Major’s diverse range of global flavours, the students produced a wide range of dishes with everything from Chinese Chicken Won Tons to Korean Pork appearing amongst the entries in the Major Street Food Challenge. Students also got creative with our fragrant Pan-Asian Bases and Stock Pastes in the Asian Inspired Chicken Dish and Major and Tilda Risotto classes and it was clear they had done their homework when deciding on the best flavour combinations.

At the end of an exciting day, the students gathered for the eagerly anticipated results. In true reflection of the high standard of entries put forward by this bunch of talented students, medals flew off the podium in all of the classes, a testament to all their hard work. However, at the end of the day, it was Kieran Rudolph from Loughborough College (Major Asian Inspired Chicken Dish served with Tilda Basmati Rice), Jack Kirby from Shrewsbury College (The Tilda and Major Risotto Challenge) and Monica Pusey from South City College Birmingham (Major Street Food Challenge) who took away awards for Best in Class.

Competitions like Salon Culinaire are an excellent opportunity for young chefs to gain experience that will help them in their future careers. It not only gives them the chance to hone their skills, but also teaches them more about working under pressure and allows them to demonstrate their dedication to the industry. Speaking about the competition, Major’s Managing Director, David Bryant, said, “Its incredibly important that we continue to support competitions like Salon Culinaire to help young chefs achieve their full potential. Seeing the standard improving year on year makes me incredibly proud to be a part of it and we will continue to support the competition for as long as we can. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
