With the summer now upon us, millions of children across the UK are going without the free school meals they receive during term time. This forces families who rely on this system as a way of providing their children with regular, nutritional meals, to find alternative ways to feed their children during the holidays, something that many of them are unable to afford.

The Family, Fun & Food project was set up to help these families by providing them with healthy meals, opportunities to interact with other families and a chance to learn key skills. Sam Ward from Growing Minds is a founding member of the FFF Project and says that; "the Government have acknowledged holiday hunger as a growing issue and are currently looking at projects which allow children and families access to healthy food, learning, enrichment, sport and activity during the holidays. Our Family, Fun and Food project does just this and by working together collectively with other groups we hope to expand this pilot further and ensure its sustainability."

On the back of last year’s success, the 2018 initiative aims to help even more families during the six-week summer break and already the children are learning to make things like bread and pizza, which they can enjoy at home. “The FFF project isn’t just about providing these families with nutritional meals once a week, we also want to help them find affordable ways to feed themselves at home on a regular basis and so we show them easy, low cost meals they can make at home which encourages them all to get involved and gives them the chance to interact with others,” says Tracey Lane, Major’s Business Development Manager for the Foodservice division in the South West. “I’m delighted to be involved with the project again as its so important that we help these families get the support they need. It’s great to see them benefitting from the project and if we can continue to help these families and others like them, then their futures look bright.”
